Now all players can try out Stadia from
Google - but for the time being because of the corona crisis only with a
maximum resolution of 1080p.
Google has started to offer its game streaming
service Stadia even without a paid subscription. That sounds a bit
strange, but there are reasons for that: First, it is not officially the
previously announced free base version. Instead, you can use the Pro
version, which is actually subject to a fee, for two months free of charge.
Second, the roll-out is now happening in 14 countries but it can take up to 48 hours to get access. Google
announces all of this in its blog and connects it more or less directly to the
corona pandemic.
Video games can be a way to share with friends and family
at a distance too good to spend time, writes the company on
his blog. We suspect that given the initial restrictions, Google
wanted to offer something for all players as soon as possible instead of
waiting for base.
Due to the corona crisis, the maximum possible resolution on
some devices is temporarily limited from 4K to 1080p. This is to prevent
network overload: In 4K, Stadia claims to send up to 20 GB per hour through the
data lines. In 1080p there is a maximum of 12.6 GB and at 720p around 4.5
GB per hour.
The new members get access to nine games, including Grid,
Destiny 2 - The Collection and Thumper. You can buy more games like on
Steam or in similar shops. After the two free months, the subscription
must be paid $11 per month. Anyone who is already a Stadia Pro member
will not be charged for the next two months. The subscription can be
canceled at any time.
Stadia runs on PCs in Chrome, on all operating systems
supported by the browser. Mobile devices with iOS and Android are also
supported - the latter only on selected smartphones and tablets.
The game streaming service can also be used with a Chrome-Cast
Ultra. Registration is via the official website of the service. The
usual mouse-keyboard combination can be used on the PC for control. A compatible
gamepad can be coupled to mobile devices.
