Apple's new Macbook Air is an attractive
offer, but for many users it is worth waiting for the upcoming Macbook
Pro. We explain why.
There are good reasons why Mac users find
out about upcoming Apple offers: For many, their Macbook or iMac
is an investment or a hard-won corporate device that will be used every
day for many years. The new Macbook Air 2020 is
currently a good example of this agony of choice: The new Air is a very
tempting offer, but the successor to the Macbook is also expected
shortlyPer 13-inch appear - and not everyone can exchange or replace a
"bad buy" immediately. Here it is very useful to estimate what
the new Pro will offer.
Price
The price of the new Macbook Pro is still
unclear. The current Macbook Pro 13 inch is currently available in two
model versions: A cheap line with fewer interfaces and a simpler cooling system
costs from 1500 euros, but has just been updated. From $2190,
however, the top line of the Macbook Pro costs 13 inches with a more powerful
2.4 GHz quad core and 256 SSD. Apple will probably update the
top line first, an entry price of $2190 would be likely. But there is
still the possibility that Apple will merge the two model lines - and
a new entry-level model will come on the market for $1640.
New display
Apple traditionally uses very
good displays in the Pro models. They currently differ from the Macbook
Air models, for example, by their higher brightness, which offers advantages
not least outdoors. The range of colors is also higher, but in practice
this is only noticeable to photographers and graphic artists. There were
rumors that the upcoming Macbook could get a 14-inch display for the first
time, perhaps even a new display technology called micro-LED. That would
be another distinguishing feature to the Macbook Air. But whether 13.3 or 14
inches would make a difference in practice is doubtful.
Faster CPU and graphics
The current Macbook Pro 13 inch still has
an eighth generation Intel processor, while Apple is already in the tenth
generation for the Macbook Air called Ice Lake. The new Macbook
Pro will also get a new CPU of this generation, but a significantly faster version
than the Macbook Air. The background: The top versions of the Macbook Pro offer
a more powerful cooling system with two fans, which enables faster CPUs and
higher continuous outputs. The more powerful CPUs should also
differentiate the two product lines - just like two instead of four Thunderbolt
interfaces.
Another update we expect is support for the
new Pro Display XDR. Only very few Apple notebooks currently support the
new display: the Macbook Pro 15 inch from 2018, Macbook Pro 16 inch and the
Macbook Air 2020 - the latter received modern Iris Plus graphics. The
upcoming Macbook Pro 13-inch will also surely support the XDR display.
Keyboard
An important innovation for the upcoming
Macbook Pro will be the improved keyboard with scissors mechanism, which Apple
introduced with the Macbook Pro 16-inch. In contrast to the Macbook Air,
the new Pro model will certainly also have a touch bar, the innovative control
bar above the keyboard.
Height and Weight
Apple will not change the form factor, the
new Macbook Pro will have the dimensions and weight of its
predecessor. The new keyboard and a new 14-inch display can make it a few
millimeters larger, but this will hardly be noticeable.
Should I wait to buy a Macbook
Air? The upcoming Macbook Pro will offer many advantages over the Macbook
Air: higher performance, more interfaces and a better display. However,
high prices are to be expected. If you do not need the best possible
performance, the new Pro line is likely to have a hard time against the new
Macbook Air.
After all, gimmicks like the Touch Bar did not convince
everyone. But we are especially excited about the price and whether Apple
will finally break the division into two separate lines of the 13-inch Macbook
Pro: Apple has recently improved the features of the Macbook Air and Mac Mini
and a new Macbook Pro for $1640 could also to compete with the attractive new
Macbook Air.
